Duty Free

We all love to shop while we are on holidays. Everyone in this world likes to buy new stuff like perfumes, decorative items etc. Some have their own taste of buying cigarettes, liquor and much more. It is more fun to have to buy things when you are holidaying in other country. Many items are considered to be tax free and some can be obtained by paying little amount of the tax as duty fee.

Things like perfume, liquor and tobacco are considered to be duty free items. There were some amendments made into the Duty-Free and Tax-Free laws which are applied to European Union countries. This change came into effect on July 1, 1999. Though changes have been made, you can still purchase a wide range of Duty and Tax-Free goods.

If you are flying outside European Union you are allowed to take goods at Duty free prices. You have to pay Duty fee on fragrances, cosmetics, skincare products, some photographic and electrical goods along with few fashion and accessories, gifts and beautiful jewellery if you are planning to make a purchase within the European Union.

Goods allowed TAX FREE

Duty FreeWhile travelling from European Union to United Kingdom, you need not pay any amount of tax or duty fee on the goods purchased in another country. This is done till the price includes the tax price in its net price when the good was purchased or if the item purchased is for your own personal use and has been brought to UK by you.

The items can be gifts but this does not include any such item which is intended to be used further as a payment or to be resold to anyone. If you are an alcoholic and wish to bring alcohol in large amount, you may be questioned by the custom officer in regard to the purpose for which the goods are with you. This may happen if you appear with things more than3200 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars, 3 kg of smoking tobacco, 110 litres of beer,  10 litres of spirits, 90 litres of wine.

There is an exception for few European Union countries as well. The following exceptions stand for these countries:

From Estonia you can bring around 200 cigarettes or 250g of smoking tobacco.
From Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia you are allowed to bring 200 cigarettes.

There is no limit for bringing tobacco from other countries as long as you are going to use it. When you intend to travel outside the European Union to UK, you are allowed to bring in the following items if you travel with the items and do not pretend to sell them.

  • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
